Many scenes from the movie, The Hunger Games, were shot in Dupont State Recreational Forest. It was directed by Gary Ross, starring Jennifer Lawrence in the role of Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, and Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne. The Hunger Games trilogy, which includes Catching Fire and Mockingjay, is a young-adult adventure science fiction series written by Suzanne Collins. The Hunger Games are set in the not-too-distant future in which North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. The games are part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation, with participants forced to fight to the death — with only one survivor.
The filming at Triple Falls in DuPont State Recreational Forest is the location of the lush forest, rivers and the trees shooting out fire during the games. DuPont State Recreational Forest is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Western North Carolina, including Triple Falls, High Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Hooker Falls. Fans of The Hunger Games will flock to Dupont State Recreational Forest to see to lush forest and spectacular waterfalls. The film was also shot in the nearby cities of Asheville, Shelby and Charlotte.
